The Great Adventure Lab offers lots of high-quality, hands-on, educational and super-fun after school science, programming and engineering classes for grades PK-7 in the metro DC area (and grades K-5 in Lake County, Illinois*). In addition to LEGO robotics, we offer classes in engineeringvideo game programming, and one of our favorites: Storybook Science! Want reviews? We have tons! You can find reviews for all or our classes here, or check any individual class page for reviews of that class. Here’s a FAQ to help you get up to speed on all our after school science programs, how to sign up, and what to expect!

einstein-statueNo,  but we will help her discover and explore the world of robotics, engineering and/or science in a super fun way. Lots of parents tell us their kids come home and explain everything they learned in great detail, and then start experimenting on their own! Check out our reviews!

[And if you are an Einstein fan, you probably know all about one of our favorite statues ever, near the corner of Constitution Ave. and 22nd St. NW in Washington DC, right across the street from the Vietnam Veterans Memorial.

Unless your PTA has decided to run an over-enrolled class, our maximum student-adult ratio is 7:1.  We keep class sizes small because each student does a hands-on activity each time. Our competitors run science classes that are actually demo classes, with most of the action taking place at the front of the room while students observe (or lose interest). Our competitors will often stuff 17 or more students into one classroom with one instructor.

If you are registering online, please make sure you are using the correct link provided by your PTA. Then see this tutorial for help. If you are still having problems registering, please email us for same-day assistance.

No. Although the payment will be processed by PayPal, you can check out as a guest. Here are some screenshots.

Sorry, No. We want to protect your payment information. No one from The Great Adventure Lab will ever ask for or accept your credit card information. If you require help registering online, please see the “I’m having trouble registering” item in this FAQ.

As a class fills up, we check the roster to make sure each student is of the correct age, has the required prerequisite (if any) and is not repeating the class. When we find such a student, we inform the parent, refund that registration and open up the spot to our wait list. Our registration software automatically emails *everyone* on the waitlist to alert them about the one (or more) open spot/s. These spots are open on a first-come, first served basis.

When a class is greatly oversubscribed, your after school coordinator may ask us to run a second section of the same class on the same day and time, at the same school (in a different room). We are happy to accommodate this request if we have available instructors and equipment!

Yes, for groups of 5 or more, if you can form the group, provide the meeting space and meet during the day, in the evening, or on the weekend (we cannot offer private classes between 2:30pm and 530pm on weekdays, as all of our instructors and equipment are booked during these hours). Distance fees may apply if your venue is more than 20 minutes away from our available instructor, as computed by Google Maps.

For groups of six, prices are the same as for our after school classes. We can accommodate smaller groups by charging proportionately more. Contact us for more info.

Yes, we will provide one-on-one tutoring in any of our class subject areas, depending on instructor equipment availability (tutoring must not take place directly after school – that’s when all of our instructors/ equipment are busy). Prices start at $60/ hour. Distance fees may apply.

Our classes are not refundable. However, depending on the circumstances, we can sometimes provide a voucher good for a registration for a future class.

We do not issue refunds for missed classes. However, if we are running evening classes of the same type, and if we have room, we can arrange for your child to make up the missed class by attending the appropriate meeting of the evening class.

The Great Adventure Lab encourages children of all abilities to discover and develop their full potential. In order to plan the best experience for you child, please  tell us when you register about any special circumstances or conditions that may impact your child’s learning or participation during our classes. We will use this information when considering instructor assignments/ additional training for instructors prior to class.

However, we don’t have the resources to provide one-on-one care for any single student in a group after school science program. If a student requires a significant amount of assistance during class, the student must be accompanied by an aide whose sole task during class is to assist that child. If you have questions, please let us know!

Not to parents. We do donate money back to PTAs who conduct registration for our after school science programs; many PTAs use this money to offer financial aid to their students. You can read more about that here. Also, in some cases, you can get free tuition in return for serving as a parent aide for each class. This involves standing and helping students throughout the entire class, without leaving the room or using your phone. Details here. If we’re looking for a Parent Aide for a class, we’ll mention that on the sign-up sheet. Contact your PTA for more details.

Sorry, we’re doing our share to save the planet by saving paper! Please consider this frequently updated website as your electronic brochure. If you need something to print out to show to your PTA, contact us.
